Coming off a sloppy & muddy game vs. Livonia on Monday night (HFL 14 Livonia 8) the Cougars had a week to prepare for a tough Penfield team on Friday night.
Penfield had come into the game with only one loss and had just gone undefeated in the Cinco de Mayo lax festival the previous weekend. The game started out with both teams feeling each other out. The pace of the game was fast and physical. Garrett Ruff and Parker Hotchkiss worked the faceoff x and helped jump start a number of fastbreaks. Dane Krebbeks (2g) made a strong play at the midfield and was able to get the ball to Andrew Mapstone (6g 2a) who returned the favor back for a nice give and goal to open up a close game for the Cougars. Defensive pressure and Aidan Capp (13 sv) kept a tough Patriot’s Team from making a run. Seven different Cougars scored and 8 goals were assisted. HFL cruised 14-4.
Saturday the Cougars made their way to Canandaigua to take on the Braves for an 11 am game. The game started like it did the night before- both teams taking advantage of mistakes and physical play leading to opportunities. HFL was facing a very strong goalie that made scoring difficult early on. Tyler Kaufman (6g) found out the secret and opened up a 4-2 game. Great passing from Sutherland Thayer (1g 3a) and Andrew Mapstone (3g 5a) kept the Braves guessing and the fans cheering.
The fourth quarter saw Garrett Ruff, Garrett Heisinger, Thomas Romig, and Parker Hotchkiss playing on the defensive end with long poles- while David O’Connell (1a) ,Brian Teel, and Matt Haas got a crack at Attack. The Cougars held the Braves to only eight shots with Jake Meyer saving four. HFL 15-Canandaigua 4.
Great week to all the boys & Happy Mother’s Day Moms!!!
Cougars Go Undefeated @ Muddy’s Buddies Lax Festival
Unlike last year- the weather cooperated Sunday at the Muddy’s Buddies Lax Festival at Brighton HS. It was a great day for lacrosse and the Cougars took advantage of the chance to showcase their skills. The first of six games opened up against Pittsford. The Cougars knew they would have to get to work quickly against the Panthers and they put the pressure on them early and often. A close game at first, but the Boys in Black wore down Pittsford and beat them down the stretch 9-4.
The next two games were against Brighton 1 & Greece 1. Both games were hard fought and the final score doesn’t really tell how well they played. The Cougars managed to win both games even though they hit crossbars or goalies more then they found the back of the net. (8-5 & 7-5) The coaches made notes that they would reintroduce the lacrosse goal & focus on shooting drills in the next practice plan.
Wins against East Irondequoit (13-0), Bright0n 2(9-5), &
All in all HFL played hard to the final whistle and they had fun doing it.
Two Top Teams come to play HFL@ Lax Day
The Cougars opened the HFL Lax Day with a game against the Fairport Red Raiders.
It didn’t take long for the goals to start pouring in. A fast-paced game saw great passing and ball control. The defense was tough and didn’t let Fairport have many chances. The Cougars went into half with an 8-2 lead. Another 5 goals in the second half and face off domination sealed the victory- 13-5. Andrew Mapstone(5g 2a) and Tyler Kaufmann (2g 2a) put on a passing and scoring clinic while Jake Meyer faced 10 shots and allowed only 5.
The second game of the weekend was against
Extra passing and assisted goals made both games fun to watch. Great job to all the boys!!!
